It's much more than that. The Eigenharp uses its own, much more expressive protocol. When you press a key, it generates around 10 times more performance information that you could ever get from a midi key or control. This is one of the reasons it is much more human and expressive to play.
The Eigenharp software, EigenD, can however interact with CoreMIDI compatible MIDI devices, so you can use external MIDI instruments with the Eigenharp if you have a compatible MIDI interface.
